February 3, 2018 - General Meeting
Guest Speaker- Elizabeth Dean
'Shade, the Southern Gardener's Gift-Plants to Make and to Grow in Shade'

Elizabeth Dean and husband, Gene Griffith, started Wilkerson Mill Gardens in 1990. The decision to do so was made as they sat on a bench in the late legendary Ryan Gainey’s Decatur garden during the annual Mother’s Day Garden Tour that year. Within a short time, what began as a business growing woody plants for cut stems shifted into a specially plant nursery. It has led to a grand adventure.

Over the years the nursery has grown every woody plant Elizabeth and Gene could get their hands on and keep alive. Many are planted out and now offer gardeners the chance to see just how big that little one-gallon plant will get to be. The serendipitous acquisition of hydrangea.com led them to collect an extensive collection of hydrangeas, and hydrangeas it has been since. Now she and Gene are winnowing out the hydrangeas they don’t care for, the ones that don’t work in the southeast, the duplicates (How many blue mopheads do you need?), and the questionable. Their goal is to grow what they really love as they slip into their dotage.

Elizabeth has served on the board of the Specialty Cut Flower Association and the Atlanta Perennial Plant Association. She was a founding member of the American Hydrangea Society. She has made a point of being available to the new City of Chattahoochee Hills, offering her knowledge and plant connections for design, planting and upkeep of City Hall, parks and school grounds.

Elizabeth gave her first slide presentation at Barnsley Gardens 25 years ago and is known as a humorous, thoughtful, usually informative and always lively speaker. She will share selected opinions, observations and knowledge gained over the past years with an eye to helping gardeners succeed and delight in their gardens.
